When we moved over to Sandridge Barton we inherited some orchards, and rather than let the apples drop and go back to the land, we thought we’d try and make some cider!
Our ‘Cider’ 2020 is now available to buy! Made with numerous different varieties of apples, most of which we haven’t a clue as to what they are, but all of which are old Devon varieties! We picked, crushed and pressed the fruit in September 2020, spontaneously fermenting the juice in stainless steel over the winter.
This is a traditional method cider, made in the same way as our sparkling wines, so it went through a second fermentation in bottle and spent 12 months maturing on the lees.
In a nutshell, it’s 100% apples, nothing at all added. No filtration or preservatives. It’s perfect with a ploughman’s lunch. The stronger the Cheddar the better!
Our ‘Cider’ 2020 is dry and is in the Normandy / Bretagne style. It has characters of earthy, crunchy apple and subtle caramel aromas, a lively spritz and soft tannin from the apple skins. It is a very fresh, easy drinking cider, with complexity that lends itself to food very well.
