The road to being regenerative.

At Sandridge Barton, our best winemaking starts long before harvest, long before fruit even forms on the vine. It begins underground, in the living, breathing ecosystem of the soil. As part of our commitment to farming in a way that protects and enriches our land for generations to come, we’re moving intentionally toward fully regenerative viticulture. This approach isn’t just good for the environment, it’s the foundation for growing healthier vines and making more distinctive, delicious wines.

Why Soil Comes First

Healthy soils are the heartbeat of any vineyard. That’s why we’re investing our energy into rebuilding soil life and encouraging natural ecological balance among the vines. Regenerative farming at Sandridge Barton means:

  • Planting diverse cover crops that feed the soil, encourage microbial activity, and compete gently with the vines for nutrients. This competition encourages the plants to deepen their roots and become more resilient.
  • Natural weed suppression, cutting out reliance on machinery or herbicides.
  • Welcoming wildlife back among the rows, creating a dynamic environment of insects, birds, and small mammals that contribute to a healthier ecosystem overall.
  • Eliminating under‑vine tilling, allowing soil structure to form naturally and protecting the delicate fungal networks that help vines absorb water and nutrients.

These practices give us soils that are richer, better structured, and alive with beneficial organisms. And when the soil thrives, the vines do too, becoming more capable of handling disease pressure and environmental stress without intervention. Ultimately, this means stronger vines, cleaner fruit, and wines with greater depth, clarity, and sense of place.

Less Intervention, More Expression

Of course, the vineyard is only half the story. Once the grapes arrive in the winery, our philosophy stays the same: do less, but do it with intention.

Our winemaking follows a minimal‑intervention approach rooted in respecting the fruit we’ve worked so hard to grow regeneratively:

  • Wild native ferments, harnessing the natural yeasts that live in our environment.
  • Low sulphur additions, used carefully and sparingly.
  • Gentle, thoughtful handling, avoiding unnecessary movement or manipulation of the wine.

The aim is simple: to allow each wine to express the character of where it’s grown, the varietal purity, the river‑cooled microclimate of the Dart Valley, and the nuances delivered by healthier soils. It’s wine made honestly. More flavour, less fuss.

A Future Built on Responsibility

This regenerative journey aligns strongly with our wider sustainability commitments as an estate, from responsible land stewardship to environmentally conscious winery design. It also strengthens our mission to craft wines that reflect our region with authenticity and pride.

By farming in ways that restore rather than deplete, we’re ensuring Sandridge Barton becomes an even more vibrant ecosystem, not just for vines, but for wildlife, our team, and the community around us.
